Dining in Ramadan: Tips for Creating a Functional and Beautiful Iftar Space

March 12, 2025 | By

With Ramadan here, it is time to bring about some changes in the interior to enhance the communal atmosphere of the month. As families gather at Iftar to break their fast together, even the simplest decorations can transform the experience if done correctly.

With just that in mind, read on to find out a few simple ways to make changes in the decorations to reflect the essence of this sacred time.

Optimising the Layout

To encourage conversation and strengthen connections, an optimum layout must be planned out first.

Iftar is one meal that brings the entire family together, so it is necessary to make sure that there is enough space for everyone.

Whether it be by using larger tables or adding more chairs, there is always a way to fit everyone in. Opting out of using any furniture at all and arranging for floor seating with rugs and cushions is also a great way.

While accommodating everyone is necessary, leaving room for easy movement is equally necessary. Arranging things while leaving a space in between allows people to move around easily.

Ensuring easy accessibility makes serving food or clearing tables convenient, also making the process pleasant.

Setting the Ambiance

Knowing what type of mood to go for while setting the space helps the process.

Ramadan is associated with peace and harmony, so it must be reflected in the space.

Choosing a colour palette is a great place to start. Selecting the right one can be quite a task, but if correctly done, it not only reflects the significance of the time but also promotes a sense of serenity in the space.

Warm tones like gold and yellows are elegant and also in alignment with the festive atmosphere. Deep greens or rich burgundies are also popular choices due to their association with sacredness and sophistication.

Dim lighting creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. Creating a focal point with a decorative lantern enhances the vibe.

Hanging up crescent-shaped moon lights on the walls or laying down star-patterned string lights on the table, with some candles here and there add a touch of magic.

Incorporating Cultural Elements

Iftar is in its essence a cultural celebration just as much as it is a religious one, as it blends traditional elements with the celestial spirit of Ramadan.

Bursts of vibrant colour all over by changing out rugs and curtains are well complemented by placing accent items like brass or copper trays or vases. Using ornate patterns in the choice of décor brings out the cultural element of things.

Incorporating décor inspired by the religious aspect of things, like frames of Arabic calligraphy or tapestries of the holy Kaaba, also enhances the sacred spirit.

Ensuring Practical Functionality

Making the most out of the space is essential in ensuring practical functionality.

Organizing foods and drinks according to groups in buffet style or on multiple tables allows easy access and makes serving and cleaning easier. Ensuring that there is enough storage to keep refills for whenever they are needed is also important.

Setting out the utensils beforehand is necessary. Making sure that they can easily be taken care of while picking them out is also a saving grace in the long run.

Enhancing the Table Setting

At the very centre of the experience is the table, so it must be able to immediately draw attention towards it.

A tablecloth with a clean pattern works as the perfect blank canvas, ready to be coloured in with various accessories. A table runner with bold colours and intricate patterns acts as the splash of colour required to kickstart the artwork, and a centrepiece in the form of a variety of items ranging from candle stands to flower vases acts as the final stroke needed to finish.

With the backdrop done, time to bring out the finest tableware and set up the best possible spread.

Adding the Final Touches

With most of the set-up done, breathe some life into the space with a touch of green.

Nature instantly elevates any place. Hanging a wreath of greenery studded with floral flecks brightens the experience with the first step in. Scattering some small potted plants or creating a central attraction with a few large indoor plants also freshens up the space.

Slightly away from all the hustle and bustle that the meal is certain to beckon, a clean and quiet place can be used to pray afterwards. Prayer rugs and prayer beads can be already set out for all those who need them. Lighting a scented candle or using a fragrance diffuser can also be done to further enhance the peacefulness.
